Etymology
Borrowed from Hindustani خاکی / ख़ाकी (xākī), from Classical Persian خاکی (xākī, “dusty, earthy, earth-colored”).
Sense 5 was coined in reference to the colour of the uniform of British troops during the Second Boer War; compare rooinek.
