Compare Middle English groti, grooti (slimy, muddy), from Old English grotiġ (earthy, dirty) (modern dialectal English groaty, Scots grotty), which is equivalent to groat +‎ -y. Compare also Scottish Gaelic grod (rotten, lousy, terrible), Middle Irish grot (bitter, sour).
