From Proto-Finnic *raita, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *raidō, originally referring to a trail or track left behind while riding. Association with etymology 2 has also been proposed. Cognate with Northern Karelian raita. Related to raide, either a derivative or a parallel loan from the same Germanic source.
