Cognate with Dutch verbieden (to forbid), German verbieten (to forbid), Danish forbyde (to forbid), Norwegian Bokmål forby (to forbid), Swedish förbjuda (to forbid), Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (faurbiudan).
