From Middle English herberwe, herber, from Old English herebeorg (shelter, lodgings, quarters), from Proto-West Germanic *harjabergu (army shelter, refuge), from *harjaz (army) + *bergō (protection), equivalent to Old English here (army, host) + beorg (defense, protection, refuge).
