The Middle English derives from Latin zēlōtēs, from Ancient Greek ζηλωτής (zēlōtḗs, emulator, zealous admirer, follower), from ζῆλος (zêlos, zeal, jealousy), from ζηλόω (zēlóō, to emulate, to be jealous).
